Welcome to Hobart Orpheus Choir
Celebrating Over 140 Years Performing
The Hobart Orpheus Choir meets at the Salvation Army Citadel. 180 Elizabeth Street, Hobart, Tasmania, every Monday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm to sing together and enjoy making music. The choir’s repertoire comprises a wide range of works for mixed male and female voices, from sacred and classical composers, as well as operas and operettas, jazz and easy listening music, as well as traditional and contemporary songs.
Established in 1877, the choir is one of the oldest in continuous existence in Australia. Beginning as a group of male voices from Holy Trinity Church in Warwick Street, the choir expanded to a full SATB choir in their centenary year of 1977.
Under its Director, Madeleine Dyer, the Choir’s mission is to present the Tasmanian community with outstanding performances of a broad range of choral music and to provide opportunities for aspiring young musicians as soloists.
——
The current accompanist of the choir is Elizabeth Rockliff. Elizabeth studied pianoforte and music education at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, taught music in Hobart schools and accompanied Ogilvie High School choirs in local, interstate and overseas performances. As an accompanist and repetiteur, she has been involved in musical activities throughout the Hobart area, officiating in Eisteddfods and working with various choral organisations, including the Tasmanian Conservatorium Chorale and Festival of Voices.
The Hobart Orpheus Choir is proudly a member of Australian National Choral Association (A.N.C.A.)
